Cartographer’s House
Gainesville , Florida
narrative before the spectacle. tectonic precedes aesthetic. function mediates form.
this single occupant dwelling was approached first and foremost without noise: unnecessary gesture, form, or material that hinders the comprehension of the narrative, the whole, and its components.
the cartographer scrutinizes the landscape, observing its beauty. Each year he returns,
assembling a collection of maps that chart the growth of site 00.04.82, a plot of land set up for ecological preserve and study.
what began as a mapping exercise, soon became a reason to spend subsequent years returning to site 00.04.82 to document its phenomenological aspects. Upon his return, the cartographer decided to stay and take refuge amongst the artifacts dispersed across the terrain.
a watchtower on site 00.04.82 brought him to new heights, allowing a 360 field of vision to record the landscape. Over a period of time, the tower fell into disrepair and eventually decayed, erasing his ability to document. His means to continue map-making had run out.
